Model UN is one of those clubs that will change your life. For those of you who are returning delegates I don’t have to tell you that but for the new kids out there who are feeling nervous, you’ve come to a great place. Model UN is something I am so incredibly passionate about. I love MUN so much that I have trouble going to sleep the night before I leave for conference. I have learned so much these past 3 years at conference and I hope to be elected Secretary General to add something new to it! If appointed Secretary General for the 2013 conference I would make every effort to make the conference as connected as possible. One of the core values of the YMCA is care. I like to think of myself as a very caring person and none of that would change if I were elected Sec Gen. I would reach out to every single delegate offering any help I could give before the conference and during it. Before conference, I would make it my job to meet as many delegates as I could to ensure everyone’s conference experience is nothing to be nervous about and that the 2013 conference is going to be the best yet! During conference, I would encourage people to e-mail me to ask me any questions they might have. Through this process, I hope I could make everyone feel comfortable. In addition, I want to encourage the development of more friendships. Unity is a huge part of what MUN promotes. I would not put myself above any other delegates. I would work hard to make friends just like everyone else and keep harmony in conference because MUN is a place to have fun! Being connected is something that is important. By being connected as a MUN family we can really help our communities. Every January the Hershey Lodge is filled with people who care about those around them. Because of this, I believe a second fundraiser should be implemented. For this second fundraiser schools would collect something as simple as soda tabs. There is an organization called “Pull Tabs for Charity”. The money from donations of soda tabs goes to cancer research and supports Ronald McDonald house charities. For me, this seems like an ideal second fundraiser. Not only would the collection of soda tabs benefit cancer research but it would also spread awareness for global recycling. http://www.pulltabsforcharity.org/home Finally, who wants a small conference? This year a second conference is being held because last year’s conference had such a great turn out. The first conference will be very well attended but there is room for more delegates in the second conference. As of now the second conference is all envoys and new high schools. I would like to change that for 2013. I would work hard to find other schools that have not developed a Model UN program and pitch the idea of starting one. I hope to share my passion for MUN with multiple schools and would be ecstatic if some of them decided to joined the MUN family. I am someone who is privileged to have been part of the Model UN experience. I grow from it more and more each year. The week after I get home I cannot stop talking about all the fun I had at that year’s conference. The feeling I get at conference is something I wish everyone could feel. Help me achieve that goal and elect me, Rachel Naugle, to be your 2013 Secretary General. Thank you for all your time and have an awesome conference! BIO: Grade: 11 Years in YMCA Model UN: 3 Country & Committee Assignment: European Union- Estonia (Chair) School /Delegation: Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School List past leadership positions held: -Relay for Life Captain -CONA nominee -European Union Chair -Youth Secretariat -Attended my schools Student Leadership Conference (SLC) List 3 strengths and 2 weaknesses you have and briefly explain: Strengths I have include my positive outlook on life, the passion I have for the activities I participate in, and my desire to help others. Whenever I am in a difficult situation I always look on the bright side and do my best to see the positive as opposed to the negative. This is so much easier because of the passion I possess. I always give 150% to what I do. I have a drive to do well. Last, I never want anyone to feel left out or less than someone else. I strive to include others in a conversation and think how my actions will effect those around me. With strength comes weakness and two of my weaknesses include providing negative feedback and patience. Because I want to support all those around me I find it difficult to find fault in other people’s ideas and suggestions. In addition, I become impatient when I have to wait to see how something plays out. When I become excited about a project I have trouble waiting for it to develop. I want to quickly complete an assignment once it is given to me even though I know the reality is that it will take time.
If elected as Secretary General, pick a relevant global issue you would consider as the conference theme and explain a feasible service project to address it: A possible conference theme could be Earth trends or Going Green. In this theme, a service project regarding recycling could be developed. Recycling is something that is needed to benefit the world. There are charities that collect soda tabs, then recycle them and donate the money to cancer research. While the goal of this service project would be collecting soda tabs, it would promote the idea of going green and helping the planet we all live on. These simple tabs, would make more people aware of recycling while simultaneously helping cancer research. Because soda tabs are easy to gather, store, and donate, every delegate would be able to dramatically impact the world. Detail an instance where you acted socially responsible in accord with the goals of Y-MUN: The core values of Y-MUN are care, honesty, respect, and responsibility. These values are traits each Model UN delegate possess. Personally, I believe care to be the most important. I find myself exercising this trait on a daily basis in everything that I do. I have a dream to help a cause bigger than myself and my peers. Each year, my mom participates in a group called “College Club”. The women in this club raise funds all year in order to distribute scholarships to needy girls going to college. One of their fundraisers is working at the local recycling center on Saturdays. We unload cars of recyclables and sort them. It is our job as the volunteers to separate the different colored glass and put it in their respected bins. Along with this, plastic is in a different bin as is aluminum and steel. This is the hard work done three times a year in order to give to the girls with financial need a chance to make their dreams come true. These scholarships are given to those who not only qualify academically, but also demonstrate financial need. Without theses scholarships, some may not be able to attend college. I love to help others and this is one way I do. As I start my own process of looking at colleges I am becoming more aware of the expensive cost of college tuition. As a fellow girl, I it is my chance to help those who are in the position I will find myself in, in two years time. While it is hard to get out of bed on a Saturday morning, it is the socially responsible thing to do to prevent discrimination based on economic status. It is my responsibility to care about others |
