Different award committees will be observing all sessions and will make selections based student behavior, attendance, preparation of documents, debating skills, and overall knowledge.


 

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AWARD

Throughout the conference, any student, advisor, or staff member can recognize conference participants for displaying one of the four core values of the YMCA (honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility) or otherwise noteworthy behavior/actions. Awards are written by advisors, staff, and delegates during the conference and are presented during committees. Character Development Awards set the tone for our conference by recognizing the behaviors that produce a culture of cooperative learning.

 


PREMIER POSITION PAPER / BRIEF

At the conclusion of the conference, one person or team (in the case of the ICJ and ICC) from each committee will be recognized for preparing a premier position paper or brief. The position papers and briefs will be evaluated for grammar, ease of reading, and evidence of research, accuracy, and diction.

 


PREMIER COUNTRY AWARD / OUTSTANDING COUNTRY AWARD

At the conclusion of the conference, one country shall be recognized for its overall excellence, known as the Superior Country Award. In addition, two other countries shall receive Outstanding Country Awards. To be eligible for these awards, all members of the country must demonstrate knowledge of country policy, excellent debate skills, and accuracy and excellence in the preparation and submission of all documents. This award is a unique opportunity to recognize participants not by school affiliation, but by the cooperative efforts of all delegates.


PREMIER DELEGATION/ OUTSTANDING DELEGATION AWARDS

At the conclusion of the conference, one delegation shall be recognized as Premier Delegation for its prompt delivery of all program forms, close adherence to all program rules, and exemplary preparation & performance of its students. All delegations that meet all program deadlines and adhere to all program rules will be recognized as Outstanding Delegations.


PREMIER 1st YEAR DELEGATE AWARD

The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding 1st year delegates at the conference. The award is focused on recognizing all-around exemplary performance as a leader, statesman, and delegate. One Premier 1st Year Delegate will be awarded in each committee.


PREMIER DIPLOMAT AWARD

The purpose of this award is to recognize the most exemplary delegates at the conference. The award is focused on recognizing all-around exemplary performance as a leader, statesman, and delegate. To be eligible for this award, the delegate must demonstrate excellent debate and public speaking skills, evidence of statesmanship both inside and outside of chambers, maturity of character, poise under pressure, courtesy to fellow delegates, advisors, and guests, willingness to negotiate with adversaries, and accurately representing his / her assigned country. One Premier Diplomat award is provided for each committee (Note: Officers are not eligible for this award).


CONA DELEGATES

Twenty-five delegates and twenty alternates shall be selected to represent our program at the annual YMCA Youth Conference on National Affairs (CONA). CONA is a week-long conference held in Black Mountain, NC during the first week of July for representative students from approximately 38 state YMCA Youth and Government programs. CONA is focused on the development of individual and team leadership through the increased awareness of national and international concerns and interests. Delegates must display exemplary skills in diplomacy and performance in debate. National Affair awardees are generally well-rounded, courteous individuals willing to assist their fellow delegates, while exhibiting strong debate, speaking, and research skills.
