Model United Nations Assembly Program Draft Resolution
Topic: Education Issues to be addressed in resolution on the topic:
Justification for issues raised: The African educational system has one major flaw which permeates throughout many of Africa and it severely inhibits the ability of children to receive an education. School fees keep children in Africa from attaining a proper and complete education. According to UNICEF, school fees can consume up to a quarter of a family’s income. Cutting school fees has proven dramatically successful in past experiences. In Tanzania in 2001, primary school enrollment grew by 50%, from 4.4 million in 2002 to 6.6 million in 2003. In Kenya in 2003, enrollment grew from 6 million to 7.2 million in a matter of weeks. To offset the costs of eliminating school fees for students, the African Union could utilize aid from various sources such as the Africa Education Initiative (AEI) to subsidize funds for childhood education. Creating a public education system in Africa will have a monumental effect as new generations of educated Africans will transform and foster development throughout the continent.
